Study on Google Ads Suspension Due to Malicious Software, Unreliable Claims, and Trademark Issues
Our interaction with the client began when they reached out to us in a state of panic, expressing the issues they were facing with their Google Ads account. We were disheartened by the tone of their message, as we understood how serious the issue was and how helpless they must have been feeling.
A Google Ads account suspension can be a distressing experience, leaving anyone feeling hopeless and out of control. However, we were able to assist our client and help them regain control of their account, which we will detail through this case study.
The client contacted us through WhatsApp and shared the issues they were facing, which were all categorized as 'Ads Policy Violation' as stated by the Google Ads team. The three issues were:
- Malicious software that had been installed or was available on their website.
- Unreliable claims.
- Trademark infringement in their ad text.
Violating any Google Ads policies is a sensitive issue, as Google has a strict policy against such violations and it does not consider the ad account's budget or history. Therefore, it was essential to address the issues quickly and effectively to reinstate the account.
Our team immediately began to investigate and work towards resolving the issues, ensuring that we followed the proper protocols and guidelines to avoid any further violations.
We provided our client with regular updates on our progress, giving them the peace of mind that their account was in good hands.
Our client's Google Ads account was suspended due to Ads Policy Violations involving malicious software, unreliable claims, and trademark infringement. However, with our expertise and prompt action, we were able to assist our client in restoring their account and getting their business back on track.
The client's situation was quite stressful when they reached out to us for help. The Google Ads team had notified the client of three "Ads Policy Violations": Malicious Software, Unreliable Claim, and Trademark usage in the Ad Text. Violating Google Ads policies can be a severe problem, as Google is known for suspending accounts without a second thought. This can cause a lot of trouble for businesses that rely on Google Ads for their success.
However, at that point, the client's account was not suspended yet. They were still able to log in and run ads, which is good news. Despite receiving the notice from Google Ads, the client kept creating new ads.
Before reaching out to us, the client was desperately appealing to Google Ads to remove the notice. We advised the client to stop making appeals to avoid being marked as spam. One appeal is sufficient for Google, and repeatedly contacting them for the same issue can harm the client's account.
Our team understood the severity of the situation and got to work immediately to help the client resolve the issues with their account. We'll provide more details on our actions in the next part of this case study.
How did we advise the client?
As soon as we learned that the client's account was still accessible and running despite the notice, we immediately advised the client to halt creating new ads to avoid repeating the same mistake(s) that triggered the violation notice and potentially lead to account suspension.
The account was in a notice period and had not yet been suspended. This was a critical moment to stop using the account to prevent it from being suspended.
If the account were to be suspended, it would cause significant hassle, time, and patience to resolve the issue with the Google Ads team.
Even though the account was not suspended, it still took a considerable amount of time to sort everything out correctly. We will delve into this further in the full-fledged Google Ads case study.
To address the Google Ads privacy violation issue, we took the following actions:
We began by identifying the problem and developing a plan to resolve it.
We submitted three separate appeals to Google, each one addressing a specific issue:
- Malicious software installed on the client's website
- Unreliable claims made in the client's ads
- Trademark infringement in the client's ad text
We carefully crafted each appeal to clearly and effectively address the specific violation and demonstrate our commitment to following Google Ads policies.
Here are the steps we took to remove the malicious activity from the client's site:
We linked the client's account to our Google Partner MCC by using their Customer ID.
We conducted a thorough analysis of the website using various tools, including Google Search Console, which helped us to identify any reported errors or security issues that could have caused the malicious activity.
We found an unsafe external link in the email sent by the Google team that was redirecting to another external site. This link was unintentionally added by the developer without the site owner's knowledge.
Malicious software can be caused by a nulled theme or plugins, pirated applications or software, hacking, or even a false error from Google. Therefore, a manual review of the entire site is necessary to detect the presence of malicious activity.
After auditing the whole website and ensuring that it was free of malicious activity, we emailed Google to explain our findings. Google confirmed that the site was now unblocked and would take 72 hours to re-index. After this, the client could freely advertise.
This process took around 10 to 12 days due to some delays, but the site was finally cleared of the malicious activity.
Steps taken to address unreliable claims in Google Ads:
Addressing the issue of unreliable claims in ads is an important step to ensure that Google Ads remain a trusted platform for advertisers and users alike. Unreliable claims may refer to any kind of false or misleading information that an ad may contain. It could be present in the ad title, description, or even the landing page to which the ad leads.
For instance, an ad for a weight loss product that claims to help users lose 20 pounds in a week could be flagged as containing unreliable claims. Such claims are not only false but can also be potentially harmful to consumers who may be misled into using such products.
Given the seriousness of this issue, Google Ads has strict policies in place to regulate the kind of claims advertisers can make in their ads. Advertisers must ensure that all the information provided in their ads is accurate and that they have the evidence to back up their claims.
To tackle the issue of unreliable claims in our client's case, we first identified the ads that contained such claims. We then worked with our client to modify the ads to ensure that they were compliant with Google's policies. We ensured that the claims made in the ads were realistic, substantiated by evidence, and did not violate any of Google's policies.
In some cases, we may also have to modify the landing pages to ensure that they comply with Google's policies. This could involve making changes to the content, layout, or design of the landing page to remove any unreliable claims.
Once we were satisfied that the ads and landing pages were compliant with Google's policies, we submitted an appeal to Google to have the ads re-reviewed. This process can take some time, but we ensured that we followed up with Google to ensure that the review was expedited.
Overall, tackling the issue of unreliable claims in ads requires a careful and methodical approach. It involves identifying the problematic ads, working with the client to modify them, and ensuring that the modified ads comply with Google's policies. It can be a time-consuming process, but it is essential to maintain the integrity of Google Ads as a trusted advertising platform.
An Example of Unreliable Claims, Including:
Unreliable claims are statements that make unrealistic guarantees or promises. These can appear in ad titles, descriptions, or landing pages, and are strictly prohibited by Google Ads policies. Examples of unreliable claims include
- I am the #1 Sales Person in the U.S.A.
- You are Going to Lose 10KG with This Medicine in 10 Days.
- Earn US$1,000 A Day Using this Acute Method OR If You Are Not Able to Earn $1,000 a Day Following This Method.
In order to resolve the issue of unreliable claims, our team engaged in detailed communication with the Google Ads team. We worked together to find a solution that was feasible for both parties, resulting in the successful resolution of this issue.
Tracking/Resolving the Trademark Issue with Google Ads:
We encountered an issue where a term used in the ad text was mistakenly thought to be a trademarked term. However, after conducting a thorough review, we were able to clarify that it was not actually a trademarked term and resolve the issue with Google.
It took a total of 30 to 40 days to resolve all of the issues related to the Google Ads suspension. The main cause for the delay was slow response times from Google, but it's important to remain patient and persistent when dealing with these issues. Despite the delay, all of the issues were eventually resolved successfully."
Additionally, it's worth noting that resolving issues with Google Ads can often take longer than expected, and it's important to be prepared for that possibility. It's crucial to stay in communication with Google and provide all necessary information and documentation in a timely manner to expedite the resolution process as much as possible.
